Back to School means new apps to try! I have some fabulous finds for you!
Storest: Playing with money could not be more fun when your students use Storest. There are two parts to the app. Part One, your students can use the grocery cart to shop and determine the correct payment for their items. Hold on to your hats for Part Two! I love the cash register part of the app. You print off actual items with QR codes and money. Your students can shop and pay with money. This app blends hands on learning with technology. I absolutely love it! Watch this demo video to see it in action. I am just giddy writing about it.
Hanx Writer: From the always entertaining, Tom Hanks, comes the most novel app out there right now. Check out Hanx Writer to have your students type on a digital typewriter. It makes the typing sound and everything. So simple, but so clever to use in your writing station. The app is free but you can pay a little and choose other typewriters, ribbons, background colors, etc. Have fun typing the day away! Way to go, Forrest!
News-O-Matic: This app has been a true find! Current events/informational text for elementary students. Can I get a, “YEAH”? The news changes constantly based on what is happening in the world. The images are large and colorful. The font is easy to read. The best part is the tool bar of options next to the article. Students can tap on the icons for all these features:
- More facts about the topic
- Things to do with the information
- Picture slideshows
- Videos
- Text can be read aloud to the student (Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!)
- Rate the story
- Ask questions of the editor
- Drawing/whiteboard option
- Highlight the text
- Change text to Spanish… (AWESOME!)
